  • Fatigue Crack Growth FCG phenomenon is the most detrimental failure mechanism of mechanical structures in several industrial sectors such as: automotive, marine and aeronautics. During cyclic loading, micro-cracks can be initiated and propagated in mechanical structures, leading to unexpected failure, even when the ultimate strength of the material is much higher than the applied stress level.
  • When cracks occur, the remaining fatigue lives of these components are of paramount importance in the industry for ensuring correctly the safety behavior of such components. As a result of several aircraft crashes, whether military or civilian aircrafts, all aerospace components were designed in agreement with the damage tolerance design philosophy. This design principle is detailed in the Damage Tolerant Design Handbook and in the Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG 2006. The goal of the current research is to introduce the effect of residual stress distribution, developed near the crack tip in order to predict the FCG life of cracked structures, to consider the stochastic behavior of fatigue crack growth process and to extend the fatigue lives of cracked components using an appropriate arrest FCG repair method.

Mohamed Makki MHALLA
